Genealogy class at the library: The Iowa Genealogical Society made an offer through the Iowa Library Services to do a beginning genealogy class for any public library in Iowa that would be interested. The Rippey public library will be the site on Monday, Feb. 29, at 1 pm. Theresa Liewer of the IGS will be the presenter.
“The class covers organizing your information – forms, charts, physical storage of papers and an overview of software programs. We’ll also discuss how to evaluate sources and learn about the pitfalls of relying on other’s research, both online and in books. We’ll explore genealogy websites and work through some basic building blocks of genealogy, including your personal family items and census records,” a spokesperson said.
“Attendees are encouraged to bring birth and death dates and locations for their grandparents or great-grandparents so we can try to locate more information about them. When we’re done, everyone should have a good idea on how to start, where to go for more information and how much fun family research can be,” the spokesperson continued.
The IGC had several motivations – one was to celebrate the 50th anniversary of IGS and be of service all across the state. Another was to try and drive membership for the local societies.
Everyone is welcome to attend. There is no charge.
Rippey Lions Club: The Rippey Lions Club met Feb. 18 and had a meal prepared by Marilyn Millard and Bev Derry assisted by George Millard and LaVere Derry.
During the business meeting the group decided to made donations to the Iowa Lions Eye Bank, the Leader Dog program, Camp Hertko Hollow, a camp for children with diabetes sponsored by Iowa Lions Clubs, and to the Greene County Relay for Life to fight cancer in memory of Velda DeMoss.
Myron Rinker introduced Matt Crooks from the Dallas County Hospital who works with community education programs. He shared with the group about the Iowa Donors Network and the importance signing on driver’s licenses to be an organ donor. He also noted the Safe Sitters workshop is provided for young people who want to care for younger children. They receive a certificate at the end of the training.
A potluck meeting will be held March 3 at the Rippey United Methodist Church.

Nancy Hanaman attended the Iowa Conference Connectional Ministries Council at the Iowa United Methodist Conference Center in Des Moines. Nancy is co-chair of the Iowa Commission on the Status and Role of Women. Rev. Mark Young, chairperson of the board of Church and Society was also part of this meeting.
